Who We Are

  • 1 of 5 girls and 1 of 6 boys will be molested before their 18th birthday.
  • 1 of 5 children has been sexually propositioned on the Internet.
  • Up to 70% of sex offenders released from prison will offend again
These statistics, as shocking and disturbing as they are, represent the reality that American children face today. Unknown sex offenders in our communities represent a danger to our children unlike any other. The 1994 murder of 7 year old Megan Kanka by a convicted sex offender led New Jersey, and all states in the US to pass Megan's Law. The crux of Megan's Law is the requirement that convicted sex offender register home, work, and other addresses with local law enforcement, who in turn notify local communities that a registered sex offender is nearby.

Law enforcement was tasked with tracking sex offenders, but virtually no funding was made available to implement the law. The introduction of the Internet led to enhancements that allowed registry information to be shared more freely than ever before. However, the technology of the day limited information to tabular or list form.

In early 2005, 9 year old Jessica Lunsford was brutally assaulted and murdered by a neighbor and convicted sex offender. As a result of this and the senseless assault and murder of several other children and young women, Family Watchdog was launched as a tool to aggregate sex offender information from all states and distribute that information to the community using an easy-to-use mapping interface. Our goal is to eliminate the scourge of child molestation as an epidemic in one generation.

Family Watchdog's mission is to build awareness of nearby threats by providing accessible and accurate sex offender location information. To meet this goal, Family Watchdog has built a bilingual safety portal on both the online and mobile platforms. Our service is extremely easy to use, contains information from all states, and is updated on a daily basis to ensure that our information is as current as the states from which we receive our sex offender data.

Our utilization and market acceptance is phenomenal. In 1 year, we have become one of the top 1,500 destinations on the Internet. Our monthly average over the past 12 months is 5.5 million visitors and 70 million pages viewed. We have been supported, endorsed, or promoted by John Walsh, Ed Smart, Erin Runnion, Oprah, Dr. Phil, Bill O'Reilly, Attorney General Charlie Crist of Florida, and over 200 law enforcement agencies and other government officials. Our supporters have greatly enhanced our credibility and accelerated our acceptance by the community.

Concerned that everyone needs access to this critical safety information, the FamilyWatchdog.us offender search is provided as a community service at absolutely no charge to our visitors. FamilyWatchdog.us relies on advertising, corporate sponsorships and partnerships, and sales of notifications to fund our operational expenses and long-term investment required to maintain the best available technology to locate nearby offenders. Our service is provided in English and Spanish, and is available both on-line and on any web-enabled cellular phone. Simply browse to http://familywatchdog.us using a PC or cell phone to access FamilyWatchdog.us.

Until our service is no longer needed, Family Watchdog resolves to be the premier source of sex offender information available.

Why We Began

FamilyWatchdog.us was formed as a result of the senseless murder of Jessica Lunsford. Parents concerned about the safety of his own family, tried to locate sex offenders in their own neighborhood. Using their state's sex offender registry, we were unable to locate 4 sex offenders in our immediate area, one that was about 600 feet from one of our homes. Using his knowledge of Information Technology, We successfully mapped offenders from his state's registry, and was able for the first time to present a map of sex offenders - where they lived, and where they worked. Initially, we were simply going to create a map of sex offenders for his own state, but upon discussions with other people in other states, decided to set the goal of mapping offenders across all 50 states and includes the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. FamilyWatchdog.us is proudly the only sex offender registry in existence that is able to map registered sex offenders from all states.
